Zammer Lochputz
The legend about the water nymph and the bull
The popular excursion destination Zammer Lochputz fascinates with dizzying views of one of the most beautiful wild waters in Tyrol.
A water fountain, the Lötzer waterfall, a long tunnel, the Roman tower, a playground and the opportunity to visit a power plant make a visit to the Zammer Lochputz gorge landscape a special experience. Everything here revolves around the legend of the "Lochputz" - a rock formation in the shape of a bull, which watches over the petrified water nymph above the waterfall.
The legend
A blacksmith whose wife had died once lived in Zammer Lochputz. One day he saw a nymph near the waterfall. She moved in with him in his forge and he treated her like his own daughter. A shepherd from the Lochalm fell in love with the nymph and asked the blacksmith for her hand in marriage. He didn't want to let her go and gave the shepherd three seemingly impossible tasks. But the shepherd fulfilled them all and the blacksmith had to release the nymph to the wedding. When the shepherd wanted to come to the woman he loved in the spring, the blacksmith had cut the suspension bridge in the gorge. So the shepherd fell into the raging water, where he was transformed into a bull's head made of stone. The nymph retreated back to the back gorge, where the two are still together today.
"When milk drives my water wheel, shepherd - then it's the right time."
The Tour
After purchasing the ticket, each visitor receives a helmet and then the exciting legendary trail begins. The first stop is the suspension bridge, which offers a view of the bull's horn and the old blacksmith shop. The water jet from the bull's horn is not created artificially by pumps, but rather shoots up towards the sky through the pure power of the water.
The path leads over metal footbridges to the waterfall. Here the Lötzbach plunges thirty meters into the depths in an impressive manner. A few steps lead up to the viewing platform, where you have an unusual view of the impressive waterfall. Shortly afterwards you reach the most mysterious place in the gorge. Here the bull and the nymph are eternally united above the floods of the Lötzbach.
You can get into the cave with the mirrors via the water intake. At the end is the porthole of the moated castle. Here the water settles into a small basin before it begins its steep, fast and powerful journey into the valley.
Downhill again you come to the Lötzturm. This dates back to the time of the Appenzell Wars in 1406 and was part of a defensive complex that originally consisted of three towers and a continuous wall. The legendary film is shown to visitors in the Roman Tower.
At the end there is a small playground for children to climb and slide.
The tour of the mystical gorge takes about 1 hour.
