Obernberg am Brenner
In the kingdom of the mountain king
Many people know the place from its natural jewel, Lake Obernberg, which is known far beyond the borders. The small town in a side valley of the Wipptal has a lot to offer in terms of landscape.
A piece of forgotten Tyrol
Obernberg is located at 1,380 meters above sea level in the Obernberger Valley, which runs from the Wipptal near Gries am Brenner first to the west and then to the south. It is often referred to as the “Canada of Tyrol”. The reason for this is the high mountains, the extensive forests and, above all, the natural jewel of Lake Obernberg.
The small town of Obernberg am Brenner is far from civilization and away from noise, traffic jams and stress. This is not what you would expect from the epithet “at the Brenner” and that is why people don't come here by chance. There is no real town center with a village square or anything similar.
The strongest symbol that manifests this idyll is the church. The onion dome of St. Nicholas rises from a hill into the sky. The surrounding meadows and the mountain peaks of the Tribulaun create a picture that we know from a picture book. By the way, the church is considered one of the most beautiful churches in all of Tyrol. The Church of St. Nicholas stands on a small hill. This is one of over 40 smaller and larger hills, so-called Ice Age gravel hills. About 8,600 years ago a rock fall occurred and formed these hills. They have been protected since 1970 and are no longer allowed to be removed.
Idyll on the Seebach
If you go into the forest from the Obernbergersee car park behind the Alpengasthof Waldesruh, you will soon reach the Seebach. Shortly after the first cow grid towards Obernbergersee on the left there is a beautiful small forest lake. There are several places where you can picnic, linger and play in the forest.
One of our favorite activities in nature is painting stones with sidewalk chalk or watercolors. You can also create a beautiful forest mandala in the forest.
Food
The Alpengasthof Waldesruh is located at the Obernbergersee car park (open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed on Mondays and Tuesdays).
