Ghost Gorge Leutasch

Welcome to the realm of the gorge spirit and his friends.

Geisterklamm Leutasch

Hell's water and ghost pools, witches' cauldrons and devil's water, an adventure world made of water and stone. While the Leutasher Ache babbles comfortably in the Leutaschtal, a natural obstacle awaits you at the end of the valley. Here the Leutascher Ache meanders approx. 110 meters down towards Mittenwald, where it flows into the Isar.

The Ghost Gorge Leutasch is the perfect excursion destination for families with children, because the gorge spirit has been sitting deep between the crevices in the rocks for thousands of years. The gorge ghost rarely shows up and so only a few residents of Mittenwald and Leutasch have seen him outside of the ghost gorge. But if you move around the spirit gorge with the necessary respect and keep your eyes and ears wide open, you may be able to catch a brief glimpse of the gorge spirit or perhaps spot one of the companions. Of course, the gorge ghost also has assistants who support him in his pranks in the ghost gorge. Water fairies and water gnomes help the ruler in the ghost gorge and celebrate wild parties at night with raging water music. They perform their veil dance or ride across the water with a tail of fire.

On the paths through the ghost gorge (goblin path and gorge spirit path) you can learn a lot about the legend of the gorge spirit and the little ones can safely go on a discovery tour through the wild and rough nature of the ghost realm. Once you have entered the Spirit Gorge Realm through the large gate of the Rainbow Serpent in the west, there is no turning back for the time being. On modern paths, which are secured by a gate on both sides, you go deep into the Ghost Gorge. Thanks to the grid floor, the adventurers hungry for discovery will not miss any movement, no matter how small, on the gorge cliffs or in the deep and crystal-clear hell water.

Important note: The narrow gorge walkway is not suitable for strollers and dogs.

The legend of the gorge spirit

"Help us convince the gorge spirit to stay with us because nowhere is more beautiful than in the ghost gorge."

The gorge spirit has lived in the Leutaschklamm since the beginning of time. He knows every stone, every bird and every little moss plant. He looks out for everyone and settles every dispute. It was always like that, but recently the gorge spirit has stopped being interested. When his two friends, the nature spirits Flora and Einstein, hear this, they are horrified.

With summer 2023, the Geistklamm, also known as Leutaschklamm, will delight with a newly designed themed trail. Visitors of all ages hike through the gorge on four different circuits and discover it in a playful way. Captivating stories, numerous games and interesting facts await you, as well as an authentic nature experience between the rushing waters and the picturesque mountain forest.

Goblin path

The goblin path begins right at the entrance to the waterfall path. This is best walked in a clockwise direction, as there are several information boards along the goblin path that tell visitors in an entertaining and child-friendly way about the creation of the Leutaschklamm and its secrets. In the first 500 meters, the legend surrounding the Leutaschklamm lightens the climb to the glacier. When you arrive at the Gletscherschliff inn, you have a great view of Mittenwald and the Mittenwald Karwendel. This view can then be enjoyed on the terrace of the inn with a snack and a freshly tapped shandy before continuing towards the Leutaschklamm. Past the large rock with the impressive trace of the glacier, you walk about half a kilometer through the forest before climbing down to the panoramic bridge. At this point at the latest, even the last visitor will be deeply impressed by the Leutaschklamm, which winds its way wildly through the deep gorge, leaving bizarre indentations and niches behind. After the panoramic bridge, the goblin path continues to the right and winds its way down the last few meters on serpentines towards Mittenwald. The goblin path is around 1.9 km long.

Klammgeistweg

The Klammgeistweg leads even deeper into the Leutaschklamm and provides a variety of impressions of the Leutaschklamm. The Klammgeistweg is around 3 km long, leads approx. 850 m directly through the Leutaschklamm and can be walked either individually from the Leutasch car park or as an extension of the goblin path from Mittenwald. From the Leutasch car park it's around half a kilometer along a forest path. Here the legend about the gorge spirit is told again before you are led by the rainbow snake to the dizzying but safe path high above the Leutasch gorge. The Klammgeistweg leads past the ghost grotto and the Hell Bridge to the panoramic bridge, where you can climb back up into the border forest and hike along a comfortable forest path towards the parking lot.

Wasserfallsteig and connecting circuit in Mittenwald

Another highlight experience is the waterfalls trail. To get there, you can follow the connecting Mittenwald circuit from the panoramic bridge. This part of the Leutaschklamm has been accessible for over 130 years. At the Mittenwalder Klammkiosk you can go into the Leutaschklamm in the summer months. The wooden planks lead just a few meters above the water around 200 meters into the Leutaschklamm. The Wasserfallsteig is the complete contrast to the modern constructions that open up the rest of the Leutaschklamm. Here on the waterfall path you can feel the power of the water masses up close. Just a few meters from your feet, the springs and waterfalls dance and the steep walls of the Leutaschklamm reflect the sounds of the roaring water. After around 200 meters, the waterfall trail ends in front of the 23 meter high waterfall, over which a beautiful rainbow spreads out when the light is right. Along the path you can still see the iron rings in the rock that supported the wooden beams of the first Leutaschklamm gorge development. The wooden path is secured with a railing on the water side and with a steel cable on the rock side. Provided you take appropriate care, the waterfall trail can be climbed without any problems. Alternatively, it is possible to return by bus. The “Mittenwald Dekan-Karl-Platz” bus stop can be reached in about 30 minutes.

Prices

The newly developed upper area of the Leutaschklamm can be visited free of charge. The Goblin Path, Gorge Spirit Path, Höll Bridge and Panorama Bridge are freely accessible from all sides. There is a small entrance fee for the waterfall trail only.

Food

At the parking lot and the start or end of the gorge hike you can stop at the Klammgeist inn. Open daily from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday rest day.

If you do the waterfall trail, you can get refreshments at the gorge kiosk.
